I recently rooted my new Droid 3 and when I went looking for Tether programs and found this one. This one however requires no root so, I figured I’d share it with ya’ll. Clockwork, the same folks behind Clockwork Mod, has a great tether program. You need 10.6 or above. You can download both the Tether program for your Mac and the Android APK (app) file from the Box File Widget on the right hand side of this blog. So you’ve got your emulators running on your iPad but do you have the perfect way to play them? Now you can with the iCADE. What looks like a great retro style arcade cabinet slash controller for your iPad. I don’t own an iPad, but this makes me want to buy one. Check it out over at Think Geek.

I almost put a question mark in the title of this post. It is always frustrating when I’m super late to the party, the party being the update to a Virtual Jaguar emulator. I originally blogged about this back in 2009 and at the time, the emulator hadn’t seen an update since 2008. This was actually updated several months ago, but I’m just now getting the memo. I don’t have a way of testing this emulator, but for those of you interested, you can download it from the Box File Widget or from their homepage. Let’s check out the changes from the Read Me file.

Download the latest build of QMC2 for Mac OS X (x86, ppc) here: qmc2-macosxuniversal-0.34.dmg

Qt-wise, the package is self-contained, that is it already includes the Qt 4 framework (4.7.3). You only need to additionally install the SDL framework (1.2.14), which is required for MAME & MESS anyway on that platform. The binaries require Mac OS X 10.4 or higher and have been created and tested on 10.6 (x86 architecture).

If you want or need to build QMC2 from source (explained in this FAQ), note that XCode 4.x is currently NOT supported, only XCode 3.2 (due to a Qt limitation; community patches for qmake to support XCode 4 already exist, though)!

Please also note that there’s a Qt/Phonon bug that may cause a post-mortem crash on exit, which you can safely ignore (though it may be annoying). If it happens to you, there’s nothing we can do about it, but you can disable the annoying crash report dialog if you will:

$ defaults write com.apple.CrashReporter DialogType none

To re-enable the crash report, just replace none with prompt.

Boxer, a great Dos Box tool, was updated and now sits at version 1.2. Boxer takes your Dos program and “boxes” it up using a little bit of DosBox magic, allowing you to run various Dos games or applications on your Mac. As always, grab the download from the right hand side of this blog or from their home page. Let’s check out the changes.

Roland MT-32 support:

• Emulates the Roland MT-32/CM-32L Sound Module, beloved of Sierra and Origin fans everywhere. Big kudos to the Munt project for their emulation! Emulation requires MT-32 or CM-32L ROMs, which aren’t legal to bundle with Boxer. Drag your own ROMs into Boxer’s Audio Preferences to enable the emulation.
• Displays secret game messages from the MT-32’s LCD in a spiffy bezel overlay.
• Detects if you’ve got a real MT-32 plugged in, and pipes MT-32 music to that automatically. No configuration needed: just a MIDI-to-USB cable.
• Autodetects MT-32-compatible games: just tell the game to play MT-32 music and you’re all set.

Easier CD-swapping for multi-CD games:

• Adding a new CD will replace any previous one, using the same drive letter. No more shuffling drives around when you need the next disc!
• The Drives Inspector displays inactive CDs along with the currently-active one, so you can swap back and forth between CDs quickly. (You can also cycle through CDs with Cmd+Shift+left/right.)
• Extra CDs can be imported into the gamebox from the Drives panel while playing, making them always available to swap between.

Much more reliable importing from Good Old Games:

• Custom DOSBox emulation settings are now imported along with the game files, to ensure the game works as it should: no need to fix sound settings or mess with drive mounts.
• These settings are used to pick the right program to launch automatically, so you can get playing straight away.

A laundry-list of other improvements and bugfixes:

• No more switching Spaces by accident! OS X’s own function key and arrow-key hotkeys are now suppressed while playing, in all OS X versions. May require a tweak to your Universal Access preferences: see Boxer’s Preferences panel for details.
• Added options to Mouse Inspector to modify/disable Boxer’s Ctrl+click and Ctrl+Opt+click mouse button shortcuts, to fix games that give these key combos their own behaviour.
• Improved game startup times.
• New look-and-feel for program panel to fit in better on Lion.
• Tweaked fullscreen scaling to reduce stretchmarks.
• Added friendly explanations when a drive could not be mounted or unmounted.
• Game import can now be cancelled while it is scanning a game folder.
• OS X 10.5: Suppressed “This game appears to be ignoring your joystick” warning when Gamepad Companion or ControllerMate are running.
• OS X 10.7: Fixed mouse disappearing ‘behind’ the Inspector panel in seamless mouse mode.

Macifom saw an update last month and now sits at version 016. Macifom is a great NES emulator for Mac OSX. As usual, you can grab it from the Box File Widget that resides on the right hand side of the Mac Emulators homepage or from their website. Let’s check out the changes.

• Support for software using the VRC1, VRC2a, VRC2b and iNES #184 mappers.
• Improved support for USB gamepads and joysticks.
• Removed all remaining Carbon and other deprecated code. This version adds support for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion and drops support for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.
• Macifom can now be launched by double-clicking an iNES-format file.
